Overview
We’re seeking a technically proficient leader in Accounting & Finance Operations who is excited about building processes, not just maintaining them. This role will have full, end-to-end ownership of the entire Accounting Operations, from close and compliance to audit and controls. The ideal candidate thrives in a startup environment, enjoys building the accounting processes of a business, and is a tech-savvy individual who is excited by innovative ways to improve Financial Operations processes. They should be able to roll up their sleeves to execute, not just to manage, while maintaining a strategic picture.
This company operates with urgency, curiosity, and low ego. Teams move quickly, think deeply, and care about doing meaningful work that changes how journalism functions on a global scale. This is an opportunity to step into a critical seat during a moment of growth, international expansion, and long-term financial maturation. Working as a trusted partner to the CFO, directly contributing to how the organization expands.
Primary Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Close
- Oversee daily accounting functions, including month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
- Manage accounts receivable/payable, payroll, revenue recognition, fixed assets, and cash management.
- Prepare accurate, timely financial statements in compliance with US GAAP.
- Implement continuous process improvements and relevant accounting processes that are scalable and audit-ready.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Ensure regulatory and tax compliance for federal, state, and local requirements (with external advisor support).
- Oversee commission reporting and revenue reconciliations.
- Handle equity transactions, cap table maintenance, and related documentation in collaboration with legal and leadership.
- Lead external audit processes from preparation through completion.
Systems & Infrastructure
- Evaluate existing financial systems and processes; develop and implement a roadmap for upgrades, enhanced controls, and improved reporting efficiency.
- Drive accounting software enhancements and ERP optimization (Sage Intacct experience preferred).
- Identify and deploy AI/automation to improve close timelines, reporting quality, and boost overall finance efficiency.
- Build a scalable accounting infrastructure to support future international expansion.
Strategic Partnership
- Act as a key financial advisor to the CFO and executive team, delivering insights, risk identification, and input on strategic planning and capital allocation.
- Assist with banking/treasury relationships, financing, and investor processes.
- Advise on international growth, including accounting, tax, and compliance structuring for new markets, legal entities, and regulatory frameworks.
What Makes This Role Different
-
Be part of a profitable and growing company that is redefining global journalism, not maintaining the status quo.
-
Culture of high standards, intellectual rigor, and work ethics that value fresh ideas and continuous improvement.
-
A genuine seat at the table, with exposure to senior leadership and C-suite stakeholders who are invested in your success.
-
High-impact, strategic, and operational Accounting Management role with full ownership and visibility.
-
Extensive growth opportunities into a Global position.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (Master's preferred). CPA Required.
- 10+ years of Operational Accounting Management experience with strong experience in US GAAP, complex close schedules, and designing financial controls that pass audits.
- Extensive experience building and improving Accounting Operations functions, not just maintaining existing processes.
- Industry experience within Media, Technology, or High-Growth VC/PE backed companies, with familiarity in advertising, subscription, or live-event revenue models.
- Experience with equity accounting, cap table management, and the financial requirements of a venture-backed company.
- Ability to operate effectively within a high-growth, fast-paced, start-up environment.
